CASE BRIEF

History begins before the written textbook.

For generations, accounts of early North America were filtered through the records of European newcomers. This investigation starts elsewhere: with landscapes, buildings, objects, knowledge systems, oral traditions, and the living descendants who interpret them.

Your task

Evaluate the extent of complexity—not whether every society looked the same. Build an argument using at least four documents, address political, economic, and cultural systems, source at least two records, and qualify what the evidence cannot prove.

Many regions, many systems

North America contained diverse environments and sovereign peoples. Complexity did not require one continent-wide empire or a single political model.

Evidence takes many forms

Archaeology, architecture, objects, landscapes, oral traditions, and living community knowledge can preserve history without alphabetic writing.

Complexity is multidimensional

Look for organized decision-making, exchange and production, specialized knowledge, public works, belief, law, and regional relationships.

Extent requires qualification

Weigh how widespread and strongly supported each pattern is. Distinguish direct evidence from reasonable inference and name what remains unknown.
